Dermpath Bowl

Join us for our head-to-head dermatopathology competition held during the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD)’s annual meeting, where the winners are rewarded with funds and bragging rights for their schools.

Competition Format:


Saturday’s format will consist of up to 48 teams competing in eight 30-minute sessions throughout the day.
 

  • Up to 6 teams will compete per 30-minute session.
  • All 6 teams will diagnose the same case digitally.
  • Each team will have 1 tablet with no limit to the number of residents who can assist in formulating their team’s diagnosis.
  • All teams will have 90 seconds to provide the correct diagnosis.
  • After each case, a Dermpath Diagnostics dermatopathologist will discuss the case and provide the correct diagnosis.
  • Teams that provide the correct diagnosis will continue, whereas teams that missed the diagnosis will be eliminated.
  • Continue steps 4, 5, and 6 until 2 teams are left standing.
  • The final 2 teams per session will advance into Sunday’s head-to-head single elimination brackets.


Sunday’s format will consist of 4 head-to-head rounds (Sweet 16, Elite 8, Final 4, and Championship) with each winner advancing in the bracket.
 

  • Two teams will compete in a 15-minute head-to-head competition.
  • Both teams will be diagnosing 3 duplicate cases.
  • Each team will have 3 tablets with no limit to the number of residents who can assist in formulating each diagnosis.
  • All teams will have 3 minutes to provide the correct diagnosis.
  • After each session, a Dermpath Diagnostics dermatopathologist will discuss the cases and provide the correct diagnoses.
  • The team that has the most correct diagnoses advances in the brackets.

Dermpath Bowl Rules:

Participants

First- to third-year dermatology residents only.
No dermatopathologists, pathologists, fellows, or attending physicians of any type or faculty are eligible. Breaking this rule will result in an automatic disqualification.

  • Only Dermpath Bowl platform allowed
Teams
  • There is no size limit regarding the number of dermatology residents per team.
  • Each team must consist of only residents from the same dermatology residency program.
  • Teams that miss the diagnosis portion of the competition will be disqualified.
  • In case of a tie, predetermined cases will be used to determine the winner.
  • A panel of Dermpath Diagnostics’ dermatopathologists will assist in the judging process.

What’s on the line?

  • Runners Up: $1,500 donation to team’s institution to further educational objectives
  • Champions: Champions: $5,000 donation to team’s institution to further educational objectives
